UNA Exchange is a registered charity. We send volunteers overseas to work on community based projects in over 60 countries worldwide. Volunteers live and work in an international group, alongside people from many different cultures on projects lasting between 2 to 3 weeks, although there are also opportunities for longer volunteering projects. Longer-term individual placements of up to a year are also available in Europe, through the fully-funded EVS (European Voluntary Service) programme. International volunteer projects are organised all year round, but the majority run during the summer months. The work involved varies widely, depending on the project, but does not usually require specific skills or qualifications. In addition to our overseas programme we also organise projects in Wales, and there are opportunities for people interested in leading projects, becoming volunteer trainers, taking part in fundraising and promotional activities or volunteering in our offices. We organise a yearly training course to prepare leaders to coordinate groups of international volunteers every Easter.

INTER-CULTURAL YOUTH EXCHANGE

Description

ICYEUK is an ethical volunteering charity which believes in a world where the sharing of cultures and ideas is embraced, celebrated and lived.
We work in partnership with an international network of locally managed ICYE organisations and partners to provide supported international volunteer opportunities that directly benefit local communities and encourage young people from around the world to live, learn and work together.

Volunteers support local projects throughout Africa, Latin America, Europe and Asia for anything between 3 weeks and 12 months. Projects include promoting human & women’s rights, supporting those with disabilities or affected by HIV and AIDS, education projects, environmental conservation, rehabilitating street children, community development programmes and much more.

As a cultural programme, ICYE UK volunteers receive extensive training both before departure and on-arrival, and support & training throughout their stay. We invest in volunteer’s personal development, such as providing CV advice at our returned volunteer camps and we actively engage volunteers in the on-going development of the organisation.
ICYE UK also helps extensively with fundraising towards raising the programme fee. As a charity, we have an all-inclusve programme fee (ie. return flights, accommodation, food, transport costs, visa costs etc) and our support means our volunteers are well equipped to be able to raise funds.

Recruitment is ongoing throughout the year and we have regular information days, held at our office in Kilburn, London, where interested parties are invited to find out more about our ethical charity and meet returned volunteers. For details of specific upcoming information days and countries/ projects, please visit our website www.icye.org.uk.

Description

Volunteer Action for Peace (VAP) provide affordable volunteer opportunities worldwide from 2 weeks to 12 months, throughout the world. VAP was founded in the 1960s and exchanges an average of 150 volunteers annually with dozens of international partner organisations worldwide.

Workcamps (2-4 weeks) typically bring together a temporary community of 8-30 international volunteers from different backgrounds to provide services to local community projects. The volunteers carry out unskilled tasks that would not otherwise be possible. The practical work is only part of the main objective. The work is a tool and method to promote intercultural understanding and friendship between the volunteers and with the local community.

VAP’s Medium/Long Term Volunteering (M/LTV) Programme gives you the chance to volunteer abroad from 1 to 12 months, working in a project organised by one of the many grassroots organisations that VAP co-operates with around the world. M/LTV is not only about work, but it is also a unique experience of combining living abroad with learning a new culture and getting to know the local people, while being deeply involved with a project and its aims.

OUTREACH MOLDOVA

Description

Welcome to Outreach Moldova and Hincesti Orphanage. We are an Irish Charity based in Dublin that works with 600 disabled orphaned children and young adults in the Republic of Moldova in Eastern Europe. We concentrate on all aspects of their care from medical and surgical to building and renovation to improve the environment they live in. We believe that humanitarian assistance programmes must target all areas of need not just immediate material relief. For this reason we have implemented and supervised the incorporation of social, educational and care programmes with local staff to provide the care these children need. We are a non-profit organisation and Irish staff working both in Ireland and Moldova. We have Irish administrators living in Moldova to oversee all work carried out by both local staff and Irish volunteers. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who is involved in assisting Outreach Moldova both here in Ireland and those who travel to care for the children. Without your support we would not be able to continue our work. We have run a volunteer programme since 2001 that brings Irish people from all walks of life to work with us out in the orphanage. Over the past 13 years we have had 1000 volunteers travel to Moldova to provide the children with much needed love and attention. The work they do is truly inspiring and the children return this affection with great trust and enthusiasm. If you want to become a volunteer there are certain criteria that you must fulfil: a) Be 18 years or over at time of application b) Fill in application form including Garda vetting c) Attend the information - pre-departure training day d) Fundraise e) Have all vaccinations and medical checks in place before travelling. Past volunteers have ranged from medical doctors, nurses, therapists, craftsmen, teachers, mums and dads, 3rd level students etc. The list is endless. Many of whom travel out time and again to work with the children.

ABRUZZO LAZIO AND MOLISE NATIONAL PARK

Description

The Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, began its recovery in 1970 and has always considered volunteers as being an important. Each year hundreds of young people, students, environmentalists, researchers and teachers cooperate by freely offering their time to help the many activities the Park’s volunteers promote. Tasks can include collecting rubbish, helping the public in the Visiters Centres, marking the pathways, controlling the Park lands, creating awareness among visitors, mountain rescue, cultural activities and maintaining simple open-air structures. Volunteers take part individually, in small groups and in organized committees. Park volunteers grow in number each year and have also become more specialised and devoted to the actions which they carry out. The youngest take part in groups within the Nature Camps; the others, organised in special patrols, take part in the programme "Volunteers for Nature" which makes up watch-dogs in the more fragile and strategic areas of the Park, maintaining a surveillance over the Park lands and helping educate and raise awareness about the problems the Park faces. Without the volunteers, life in the Park would be less funny and poorer. Nature Volunteers: This initiative is promoted by the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park to offer young people who deeply care about the environment, a unique opportunity to work and live in contact with Nature. They spend a period up to 7, 14 or 21 days together with other motivated and involved people in an outpost of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise Park , working with Park operators, researchers, technicians and rangers in their various activities of prevention, control, education, assistance, maintenance and research. To participate, volunteers must be over 18 years old, have had some previous work experience in a natural environment and be able to live comfortably for a period in a mountain area, quietly and self- sufficiently in conditions that are sometimes difficult. This volunteer programme is provided by a group of 2-3 people equipped with radio telephones, a badge from the National Park and basic equipment that allows them to carry out their activities. This experience can be done throughout the year according to a calendar the Park holds. The Park provides lodging and contributes to the cost of food (€ 7,00/day), Volunteers follow the directions given by the Park personnel. The most interesting roles are: patrol activities by telemetric methods, fauna and flora surveys, keep in radio contact with the Park rangers, assistance to the public, follow scientific work, research, photographic reporting, special activities with very young visitors. All these activities are carried out with the help and the supervision of the Park personnel. VIRTUAL VOLUNTEERING: Translation of documents and promoting volunteer programmes. We may be able to accept volunteers with an offending background depending on the offence.

ECOTEER

Description

Ecoteer is a volunteering website that offers the chance to volunteer in over 50 different countries at ecolodges, conservation, teaching and community development projects. You may think this is another high cost volunteer company! We are not! We have five staff and all have suffered trying to volunteer on a low budget (all being ex-students). Therefore we have created www.EcoTeer.com Some of our placements offer free food and accommodation; the rest make small charges for food and accommodation and occasionally for a donation to the project. Therefore volunteers may only have to pay for their travel expenses and extra luxuries, plus a £15 Membership fee. This possibly makes us the cheapest volunteer placement website! We make no profit and have purely started EcoTeer to help enable students to volunteer at the right price!!

TEECH (Telecoms Eastern European Challenge)

Description

How TEECH started.....

TEECH un-officially started in 1998 when a group of people who worked together at BT took up the challenge from a work colleague to help repair two hospitals in Bucharest, Romania's capital. About 50 volunteers under the banner of BTL Aid spent a two week period in August and set about painting, plastering, adding lighting and generally making the two hospitals a cleaner, safer and brighter place.

Flushed with the success of this trip but seeing the need to be more structured, we organised ourselves into a proper registered charity and Telecoms Eastern European Challenge was born (TEECH for short). We kept "Telecom's" in our name as we continue to receive generous sponsorship from BT and many of our volunteers still work for the company although we remain a non-BT organisation and totally independent.

Annual Project.....

TEECH travel to Romania or Moldova each summer to carry out a project for those less fortunate than ourselves. We mainly work with the elderly and the young to help improve their lives for the better, by engaging the community in each project we undertake.

Project 2012

In August 2013 TEECH will be returning to Moldova to carry out a project. The project will be advertised on the website once signed off by the trustees, therefore more news to follow.

TEECH are looking for volunteers for the project, no experience is necessary, just lots of enthusiasm. We are also looking for Lorry drivers for the 4 day trip there and 4 days back. The road trip is a brilliant opportunity for all volunteers to get to know one another before the work starts on site.

We also value the skills that tradesmen, particularly electricians and carpenters can offer.

TEECH ask that volunteers pay £450 to cover the expenses of the trip (coach, hotels on route and food on location), plus raise £200 on top to go towards funding the project. Drivers are required to pay £150 plus £200.

For further information please visit the TEECH website or contact Holly at holly@teech.org
