Stoolball England is the national governing body for stoolball, a sport popular in south-east England. As well as providing governance for stoolball, we work hard to promote it in schools, clubs and leagues. We want to get more people playing stoolball in the south-east, and in other regions of the UK. We see many opportunities to achieve this but, as an organisation run by a small group of volunteers, we are not able to follow up as many as we would like to.
We would like to hear from anyone who can help us, whether you can spare an hour here and there or make a regular commitment. Possible roles include, but are not limited to:
Help with administration. We work with many organisations, including Sport England and the county sports partnerships, local councils, schools, charities, stoolball clubs and leagues and coaching companies. The work can be very interesting.
Marketing and publicity. Most people have never heard of stoolball, so media exposure is very valuable for us in raising awareness of the sport, whether at national level or local. We need help to seek out opportunities to promote stoolball and the work of Stoolball England, where at the moment we are mostly reacting to media interest when they approach us.
Funding. We do not get any direct funding from Sport England, so must raise funds ourselves or apply for grants. Inevitably our work is limited by available funds. If you help us apply for grants or sponsorship, or raise funds in other ways, you would enable us to be more effective at promoting and devloping stoolball.
Events. We organise a number of events each year, typically tournaments and training courses. Could you help us set these up and run them? A tournament is a lovely day out, but we also need help on the day with tasks such as umpiring, scoring, first aid and manning stalls.
Taster sessions. We run or help with taster sessions for schools and people looking to start new clubs, and at multi-sports festivals such as Brighton's TakePART. These are a great way to introduce new people to stoolball, and we would love to do more of them. Could you run a taster session with us, or for us?
Coaching. If you can make a regular commitment, we can train you to coach stoolball to children either in in school time or after school. This is dependent on securing funding, but schemes in Sussex and Surrey have been very successful.
