GLOBE AWARE, ADVENTURES IN SERVICE

Description

Globe Aware develops short-term volunteer programs in international environments that encourage people to immerse themselves in a unique way of giving back, focusing on the principles of cultural awareness and sustainability. This process naturally instills in them values to become lifelong advocates for a better world. Simultaneously the volunteers help to empower the host communities in creating renewable, sustainable programmes. Globe Aware's financial assistance benefits the community economically, but it is actually the involvement and collaboration between volunteers and the community that is of the greatest mutual benefit. We believe that understanding other cultures helps everyone to create better-informed solutions, not to mention leading a more enjoyable life!

Globe Aware adventures provide volunteers the opportunity to live and work side by side with a host community and to develop a real appreciation for cultures unlike our own. The host provides a safe and interesting setting in which to learn, help and have fun! The communities with whom we work choose the projects that they feel are most important to develop. The work is varied and can encompass everything from helping provide a better life for captive elephants in Thailand, playing word games with Peruvian children, planting trees in India, to painting a community centre in Costa Rica, amongst many other activities. We feel it is of supreme importance to respect the culture and heritage in which the volunteer is working. The goal is not for volunteers to change the host communities, but rather to help them in the needs that the host community has identified as important. Those who will enjoy the experience the most are those who bring an open mind and willingness to help. The natural healthy exchange of ideas and opinions leads to a mutual understanding of cultures.

VOLUNTEER LATIN AMERICA

Description

Volunteer Latin America provide free and low-cost work abroad opportunities in Central and South America. We aim to connect volunteers to some of the best grassroots projects in the environmental and humanitarian sectors.

The environmental projects we offer are as varied and interesting as you might imagine, ranging from forestry to wildlife rescue and rehabilitation. A multitude of other opportunities exist in a diverse range of species, habitats and locations. As well as offering a vast range of environmental projects, we offer volunteers the opportunity to help the economically, socially and politically disadvantaged people of the region by providing a wide variety of humanitarian work. There are opportunities to get involved in child welfare, community development, education and health programmes.

The projects we offer either require the volunteer to make a small financial contribution (participation fee), are free but volunteers are responsible for covering their own living expenses, or provide complimentary accommodation and food.

Projects vary in length from one week up to a full year. Most of the projects we offer are from one month to three months; however, there are opportunities to volunteer for shorter or longer periods of time.

Because we help hundreds of grassroots organisations find people willing to help them achieve their objectives, we support environmental conservation and local community development in the region. Without the support and commitment of volunteers many of these organisations would be unable to carry out their vital work.

Ninth Wave Global

Description

Ninth Wave Global is an independent, international organisation and think tank which works in unknown or forgotten territories over the horizon, generating space for investigation and positive change in environmental, community and social settings. We currently work in Europe, the Americas and Australasia, encouraging quiet, humble and slow exploration of places and people, opening up space for people to recognise shared humanity, needs and aspirations, culminating in concrete programs of local-led, grass-roots developmental projects fundamentally based on local horizons, not imported value systems or solutions.

Having worked in territories over the horizon with remote communities for many years, we fundamentally believe that all meaningful change is necessarily slow, locally-led, attitude-and-aspiration-based. Communities with appropriate resources and assistance are capable of generating the autonomous power to develop systems for themselves. As such, working with communities primarily in the Americas, Ninth Wave is intent not on generating change per se, but on identifying and empowering people who are capable of generating change for themselves and their communities.

ST MADOC CHRISTIAN YOUTH CAMP

Description

St. Madoc CYC was established in 1945 when local philanthropist Mr W F Burr donated 76 acres of land for the purpose of creating a youth camp on the Gower. The expressed intention was that ‘while lives were being shattered (by WWII) this camp was given for the ‘healing of the soul’. The centre was therefore for the benefit of young people and our vision continues to be ‘to provide time and space for youth to discover, grow and transform in an area of outstanding natural beauty’. Running on a tight budget as we do, we are also looking for volunteers who would like to offer their time and skills to further develop this worthwhile cause. At present our particular focus is developing our conservation programme, however, not all volunteers help in this way and there are always a variety of opportunities available. We would consider placing a volunteer with an offending background depending on the offence.

EXIS

Description

EXIS is your ticket to put together a different kind of travel experience. EXIS got started in 1982 with restlessness and an urge to ramble – before globalization was a household word and the world could be Googled in five seconds. EXIS made sure nearly 30 years ago that Danish au pairs could drink tea on the High Street in London – and now offers unique language study and voluntary work on five continents. You can probably still be an au pair, but a lot of travellers think it is just as exciting to tend elephants in Sri Lanka, help out at an orphanage in Costa Rica, work with Masai women in Tanzania, teach English to young Buddhist monks in Thailand or work on conservation in the Grand Canyon, USA. EXIS’ philosophy is still the same – to make it possible for you to satisfy your curiosity and thirst for adventure. We work with partners all over the world to build the most secure starting gate for unique experiences – and you take it from there! Forget all about the world getting smaller. It’s bigger than ever and right within your reach. Join the world... it's yours !

AFRICAN IMPACT

Description

As GoAbroad's Top Rated Volunteer Abroad Organization in 2016, African Impact is now a multi-award winning volunteer travel organization that is operating responsible and sustainable volunteer projects and internship programs throughout Southern and East Africa. We have over 16 years’ experience and have facilitated over 12,000 volunteers in 12 countries across the continent!

OUR VISION:

To maximise the positive force of volunteering and make sure our volunteers have a fun and rewarding adventure with us. We truly believe that volunteering has the power to change lives; we’ve seen it first-hand.
We aiming to integrate ourselves into the community from grassroots to partnerships with local governments and strive to nurture a culture of mutual respect.

Our volunteer experiences are based on three key things:

- We want our volunteers to have an amazing time experiencing everything Africa has to offer and leave knowing they’ve contributed to something bigger than themselves.

- We want our volunteers to learn as much as they can about local history, culture and wildlife

- We want to support local communities and conservation efforts through education and hands-on help.

Our Charity: The Happy Africa Foundation

As part of our commitment to making a positive impact, we set up The Happy Africa Foundation in 2008. The charity helps to independently monitor our projects and provides tools and expertise that help to ensure our sustainability. The charity also ensures that donations given by our volunteers are managed responsibly.

Our Wildlife Trust: ALERT

African Impact were also instrumental in the establishment of the African Lion and Environmental Research Trust (ALERT) in 2005, a non-profit organization dedicated to the facilitation and promotion of sound conservation and management plans for the African lion in consultation with governments, wildlife authorities and communities.

Alongside African Impact, ALERT also aims to support the ground-breaking four-stage African Lion Rehabilitation and Release into the Wild Program developed by our founders in 1999.

Our Projects

To ensure the sustainability of our projects, we thoroughly evaluate each potential project with a detailed scorecard before setting up a volunteering program. This involves analysing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of a project as well as its long-term viability and impact. Also, every single one of our projects has community stakeholders. We won’t run a project unless the community not only wants us there, but actually has ownership of the project. Community buy-in is essential.

We have a core emphasis on learning and empowerment for all involved – changing the lives of people in the communities we impact, our volunteers and all African Impact staff.

HEBRIDEAN WHALE AND DOLPHIN TRUST

Description

The Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust (HWDT) is a registered charity which has pioneered the study of whales, dolphins and porpoises found in the waters off Scotland's west coast. Using study techniques that neither harm nor seriously disturb the animals, the research work undertaken provides those who manage Scotland's wildlife and habitats with the information they need to achieve effective conservation. The research also provides the materials for our work in environmental education, helping to raise public awareness around the UK and educate visitors to this outstanding area about the local marine environment.

HWDT welcomes onboard about 60 volunteers every field season to assist with visual and acoustic data collection. Volunteers effectively become marine mammal scientists for the week, contributing to data collection and the general running of the boat. For more information, see http://www.whaledolphintrust.co.uk/get-involved-join-us-onboard.asp.

HWDT also recruits interns to assist with specialised tasks over the field season. Interns will spend six months in Tobermory, working alongside the HWDT team undertaking sightings and strandings tasks or educational activities. Interns will receive no funding from HWDT. For more information see http://www.whaledolphintrust.co.uk/get-involved-volunteer-placement.asp
